Applied linguist Amy Thompson has a great article about how the learning of a foreign language helps students grow their sense of compassion.  This is consistent with LEAP goals as well as with the World-Readiness Standards for Language Learning.  Schools and colleges should consider this learning outcome when revising or redesigning their educational programs:  including foreign language learning requirements doesn’t mean that every student will become fluent in the language they study, but it does mean that many more students will gain a glimpse of the larger cultural universe in which English speakers are but one of billions and billions of stars.  (Thanks, Carl Sagan!)
